Boys golf wins 4th straight Big 12 tournament

The boys golf team won their fourth consecutive Big 12 Conference Championship on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Ironwood Golf Course.

Two Ironmen posted top-5 finishes, with senior Johnnie Blackburn shooting 74 and placing 2nd.

Sophomore Drew Stevens took 4th with a score of 77.

Nathan Newman and Brendan Reardon tied for 8th, shooting 79.

Junior Liam Driskell finished 13th to round out the championship victory.

Boys soccer 10-4-1 with 9 games to play

The boys soccer team improved to 10-4-1 on the season, shutting out Peoria Richwoods on Sept. 19 in a three-goal effort before falling to Edwardsville 1-0 at home Saturday.

Community is second in the Big 12 conference standings, with a 6-1 record.

With the second half of the season looming, head soccer coach Mr. Matt Chapman is impressed with how the Ironmen have performed at the season’s halfway point.

“We’ve shut out our opponents half of our games,” Chapman said, noting that the team’s two senior goalkeepers Parker Michaels and Ian Hensrichmeyer have been terrific.

Six Ironmen boast three or more goals on the season, something Chapman said was unusual.

“Most teams,” the coach said, “have about one or two people who have a bunch of goals.”

The Iron have nine games remaining in the regular season, including three conference matches and a tournament in Iowa that Chapman said features “some pretty tough competition.”

The team’s “ultimate goal,” Chapman said, is “to be successful in the postseason. We[’ll] start with trying to win a Regional championship.”

Volleyball above .500 with six to play in regular season

The Iron volleyball team improved to 8-7 on the season, going three and one last week, winning 2-0 against Danville, Peoria High and Bloomington High School.

After opening the Intercity Tournament Saturday with a 2-1 loss to the U-High Pioneers (17-2), the Iron defeated the Raiders 25-7, 25-10 to split their matches at Normal West.

The tournament concludes Monday, when the Iron take on a 15-5 Central Catholic team and the 18-1 West Wildcats, a team that is undefeated in Conference action this season.

“It is very rare to go 4-0 in intercity,” Ironmen head coach Ms. Christine Konopasek said, “so more than anything I want to make sure we are competitive, knowing that we can play with and beat anybody.”

The Iron have six matches remaining in the regular season, including five conference contests.

Seniors Oliva Price and Addie Snoeyink look to lead the team toward their post-season goals, Konopasek said.

“l want to be playing for a Sectional championship and get a banner on the wall,” the coach said, “because for as much time and effort as they have put in that is ultimately what we’re going for.”
