“Humbling”—that’s how girls soccer head coach Mr. Matt Chapman described reaching a career milestone 24 years in the making: his 400th win.

The landmark victory came in dominant fashion, a 7-0 shutout over Danville on April 24. The Ironmen controlled the match from start to finish, outshooting the Vikings 27-2.

But Chapman, who has led the program since 2001, was quick to deflect praise.

“There’s no way that I can take credit for this,” Chapman said. “I’ve been very fortunate that we’ve had lots of great athletes come through. I’m definitely proud of [the accomplishment], but it also means I’ve been around a long time.”

Entering the season 10 wins shy of the milestone, Chapman has now compiled a career record of 403-118-34. Under his leadership, the Iron have claimed 15 regional titles and one sectional championship.

Still, Chapman continues to downplay his role in the program’s success.

“There are lots of schools where coaches have been there for a long time,” he said. “They just don’t have the same level of athletes that come through their doors.”

The 13-8-1 Iron are looking to secure a fifth straight regional title this spring to add to Chapman’s résumé—a résumé that reflects his coaching philosophy: “Leave it better than you found it.”

And he has. Chapman, the third coach in program history, inherited a team with a .579 win percentage. Over more than two decades, he has elevated that figure to .716—raising the program’s standard while maintaining consistent postseason success.

Community looks to build on that legacy Saturday, May 10, as they face the 16-1-1 Naperville Central Redhawks in search of win No. 404.
