Correll, Caraway secure 5th, All-State honors at 3A IHSA State Wrestling Tournament

Correll, Caraway secure 5th, All-State honors at 3A IHSA State Wrestling Tournament

For the second straight season Caden Correll and Cooper Caraway returned from the 3A IHSA State Wrestling Tournament in Champaign bearing hardware and All-State honors.

Correll earned a fifth place finish for the second consecutive season at the State Farm Center on Feb. 17.

Caraway joined the 106-pounder on the podium, celebrating his own fifth place finish at 215 pounds.

Correll finished his junior campaign with a 39-7 record. Community’s takedown and single-season win record holder went 3-2 in the tournament, falling to Gurnee freshman Caleb Noble in an 8-5 decision.

Noble, who boasts a career 97-3 record, went on to top the podium in the 106-pound division.

Correll would fall 7-0 to Sandburg’s Hayes before earning a 21-7 major decision over Barrington’s Kaleb Pratt, and his fifth-place medal.

For Caraway, the State competition offered a chance at redemption; last season, Caraway took home a sixth place medal after a broken bone in his hand ended his tournament early.

The senior boasted a 3-2 finish of his own, falling to eventual State champ Loyola Academy’s Kai Calcutt 13-6 decision.

After a loss to Libertyville’s Owen Mcgrory (6-3 decision), Caraway defeated Naperville Central’s Nicolas Besteiro via 3-1 decision for fifth-place honors.

Cole Gentsch, at 120 pounds, finished his season at State with a 42-7 record. After winning his first match by 4-1 decision, the junior’s second trip to State ended short of the medal ceremony. Maine South’s Teddy Flores, the eventual State champion, handed Gentsch a 3-0 decision loss with a 2-0 decision loss in the blood round ending Gentsch’s 2024 campaign.
