Unit 5 shifts to e-learning Friday due to minus 33 forecast

Unit 5 schools will hold an e-learning day Friday, Jan. 23, as forecasters predict dangerous cold, with wind chill values expected to drop to about minus 33 around 8 a.m., according to an email from Dayna Brown, the district’s Director of Communications and Community Relations.

Students should not report to school buildings and will attend classes online. Unless otherwise notified, staff members also will not be expected to report to buildings. High school students will follow their e-learning schedule, with first hour from 8:45 to 9:05 a.m., followed by 20-minute class periods throughout the morning.

District officials said an e-learning day replaces a traditional weather closure, so the day will not need to be made up at the end of the school year.

Athletics schedules also will change as a result of the e-learning day. All Friday morning practices are canceled, while Friday afternoon practices may begin after 2:30 p.m. and must end by 8 p.m.

Friday evening games and events may proceed as scheduled, and weekend activities are planned to continue but are subject to change, the email said.
