Social studies teacher Ms. Latisha Baker was surprised with a $500 award after being named WBNQ’s Bridgestone Classroom of the Month for October.
Susan Saunders, host of the pop station’s weekday morning show, presented an oversized check during Baker’s fifth-hour civics class on Oct. 24.
The program recognizes one teacher each month and provides $500 recipients can use at their discretion.
Carly Correa, a junior who witnessed the surprise, said Baker deserves the recognition because “you can tell that she actually cares about every student” instead of “just trying to get the day done.”
Baker, who said she often helps students with food, school supplies and support during crises, said she will spend the money on her students.
“It’s all about providing for kids and loving them,” the veteran teacher said.
Baker said she was initially confused when Saunders entered the room and didn’t realize it was a celebration until she saw her name on the check and noticed students were “generally happy.”
“Everyone was excited about this and it was pretty hyped,” Correa said as classmates and teachers took photos.
The nominator remains anonymous.
“I still have no idea who nominated me or wrote in, but I think that’s almost a good thing,” Baker said.
“I couldn’t ask for anything better,” Baker said, “it felt really good to be recognized.”
