Several community members spoke in support of a Normal Community teacher at the Oct. 15 McLean County Unit 5 School Board meeting at Normal West, after a photo of him wearing an “Abolish ICE” T-shirt drew criticism online.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)—the federal immigration enforcement agency created in 2003—has faced scrutiny over detention conditions and deportation practices in recent months.

Nine speakers—including students, alumni, parents and other community members—praised the teacher’s professionalism, character and dedication, while also defending his right to free speech after a photo of his shirt gained attention on social media.

The teacher has said he did not view the shirt as a political statement, but a humanitarian one.

Three attendees addressed separate concerns regarding comments made on social media by Board President Alex Williams.

While not related to Unit 5, speakers said Williams should be held accountable for his public statements as an elected official, and some requested an apology. Two of those speakers also voiced criticism of the Community teacher’s shirt.
