Senior Michael Mavec set two new track and field school records last spring in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
At the 2024 IHSA Sectional meet on May 21, Mavec ran the 110-meter hurdles in 14.59 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 14.6 set by Ryne Tharp in 1980.
Mavec also set a new school record in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.60 seconds, beating the previous mark of 39.70 set by Austin Kull in 2006.
Mavec attributed his success to offseason work and consistent training.
“It was a lot of reps, a lot of perfection in my technique,” Mavec said. “I was in and out of the gym and the track every day to really solidify the spot on the board.”
Despite dealing with a calf and Achilles injury midway through the season, Mavec said he remained focused on his goals.
“You’re told to never shoot for records, but it was always in the back of my mind,” Mavec said. “I just knew if I ran my best, it would come down.”
Looking ahead to his senior season, Mavec said he aims to place at the state level.
“Coming into my senior season,” Mavec said. “I know that there’s a lot more to give.”
