The girls soccer team looks to improve on their 6-1 record tonight when they host the 4-5 Urbana Tigers at 4:30 p.m. The Iron enter the match after April 1’s Intercity Title-clinching victory over the Bloomington Raiders.
Community outscored Intercity opponents 22-1 on the way to a 4-0 record, shutting out Bloomington 7-0, last year’s tournament champs Normal West 5-0 and Central Catholic 6-0.
Junior goalkeeper Erica Elofson gave up one goal in the tournament in Community’s 4-1 win over U-High, reigning IHSA Class 1A State Champs.
Elofson recorded 13 saves in the tournament, including a six-save performance against the Pioneers.
As a former defender, head coach Mr. Matt Chapman prides himself on the team’s defensive play.
“It’s a bedrock principle in my brain,” Chapman said, “making sure we try not to allow very many goals.”
Elofson has allowed three goals, surrendering two in the team’s lone loss of the season, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Morton Potters (4-1). Through seven games, Elofson has tallied 29 saves.
Despite the tournament’s three shutouts and the goal differential, Chapman doesn’t think the Intercity trophy came easy.
“There’s some really good talent in the Intercity,” Chapman said. “To be the team that wins all of those games, I’m really pleased with … what we were able to accomplish.”
Junior Kentucky commit Rayna Powers led the Iron’s offensive charge. Powers netted nine goals in the tournament, including two hat tricks, scoring three goals against both Central Catholic and the Bloomington Raiders.
Powers has 10 goals and two assists on the year.
Powers’ special scoring ability naturally draws a lot of attention from opposing defenses, Chapman said, something that benefits the team.
“Rayna is obviously doing a lot of great things,” Chapman said, “but you see other people contributing as well, a lot of times because she is taking a lot of the heat off of other people.”
With team’s keying on Powers, forward Emma Reichert is capitalizing. The sophomore finished Intercity with four goals and five assists.
Reichert leads the team in assists with seven on the season. Sarah Thompson is second with four, recording two each against the Wildcats and Raiders.
Dhruti Joshi, who splits time with the track team, is second in scoring for the Iron with five goals this season. Joshi netted three in Intercity action.
Community is 2-0 in Conference play ahead of tonight’s Urbana matchup. The Iron will face their biggest Big 12 challenge Thursday when they host the undefeated Peoria Notre Dame Irish (6-0) at 6:30 p.m.
