Mr. Jeff Christopherson
Tommy Davis has 21 touchdowns on the season, averaging two a game. Most of those touchdowns have come in the first half of contests this year, as the Ironmen have shutout six opponents on the season and Davis has seen limited action in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

The Iron defense and tailback Tommy Davis led Community to a dominant 43-0 win over the Argo Argonauts in the opening round of the IHSA Class 7A playoffs at Dick Tharp Field on Friday.

Amidst the driving wind and relentless rain, Community’s defense was stifling, denying the Argonauts a single first down and holding the team to negative yardage in the contest.

For Community, Davis would provide the offense; the senior scored four first-half touchdowns.

After being forced to punt on their opening drive, Davis put Community up 7-0 with an 18-yard scamper.

The Ironmen extended their lead to 14-0, capitalizing on a mishandled punt snap and taking possession at the Argo one-yard line.

Davis would punch it in from a yard out for his second score.

Community’s special teams would put the Iron up 21-0 after Anton Cassell blocked an Argo punt, and Cole Morstatter recovered the loose ball in the end zone for the score.

The Ironmen continued to make the most of Argo’s errors as Antonio Montoya recovered a fumble by Argo’s quarterback, Tadeo Sierra, to give Community the ball at the Argonauts’ 10-yard line.

The defensive play set the stage for Davis’s third touchdown, a five-yard rush to extend the score to 28-0.

While the elements neutralized the Iron’s passing attack, as quarterback Kyle Beaty went 0-5 to start the game, Beaty would add to the score with his legs. The junior gave the Iron a 35-0 edge with a five-yard touchdown of his own.

Davis’s longest run of the night came after the senior seemingly was stopped at the line. Davis bounced the run outside, taking the ball 32 yards for his fourth score.

Davis racked up 120 yards in one half of play, improving his season touchdown total to 21.

Community put up over 200 yards on the ground in the first half, with Beaty adding 30 yards and running back Calen Taylor contributing 48.

The Iron’s final score came midway through the 2nd quarter, when Argo suffered another snapping’s mishap, snapping the center quarterback exchange out of the end zone for a Community safety.

With the 43-0 win, the Iron improved to 10-0, advancing to the second round of the IHSA State Series.

Community hosts the 7-3 Boilermakers of Bradley-Bourbonnais Saturday at 6 p.m.
