“Oh, another teenage romance song from Taylor? Gotta go download it!” Every teenage girl feels the need to idolize Taylor Swift for her relatable lyrics and catchy tunes because they feel a connection with her. She falls in love and then the break-up inspires a “top of the charts” hit. But is she really in it for the fans or the millions she’s cashing in on? For years, this pop/country star has been making millions off of every love- sick tune she spurts out because the adoration of her loyal fans who feel the need to purchase every CD. Yet, each song seems to have one of 2 messages; Love is great or boys suck. One can only wonder, is she really love-struck or is she just trying to make another hit?
In recent years, she has been drifting away from her sappy small-town girl look to a more pop-star look, which is reflecting in her music. Her recent music doesn’t sound at all like it did 6 years ago, when she had just come out with her first album, Taylor Swift. Her pop-country songs have shifted to pop-rock and are all about heartbreak. It seems that Taylor should listen to her own advice and stop getting into relationships that crumble, if they’re going to end in songs like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.
Released on August 13, 2012, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” was an instant radio-success and was praised for it’s catchy tune. But the lyrics aren’t anything like her previous hits. Throughout the whole song, she adds in commentary like “ Ugh, so he calls me up and he’s like ‘I still love you’ and I’m like… ‘I just…. I mean this is exhausting, you know, like, we are never getting back together. Like ever.’ What happened to the thoughtful and inspirational Taylor that we have all grown to love?
When listening to one of Taylor’s songs, one would usually either want to jump around and sing because it’s all about love. Or the opposite of that, a lot of her songs make one want to cuddle up with some Ben & Jerry’s and have a good cry. Yet, her latest hit doesn’t give off either vibes. A less thoughtful song that, in a way is relatable, yet doesn’t seem genuine has replaced her usual heartfelt songs.
With her upcoming album, Red, about to be released, one can only hope that it doesn’t include any songs like “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” otherwise, it might be time to take a break from Taylor Swift until she goes back to her old self.
