The Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) collected $1290 during Normal Community’s fundraiser, Pennies for Pies. Pennies for Pies is an annual fundraiser where students have the opportunity to bring their lose change to school to donate. The money is being used to buy pies for the Home Sweet Home Ministries, a nonprofit organization that has been serving the homeless and hungry since 1917.

“This is our second year of doing Pennies for Pies. We have increased our donations since last year, by raising $1290 this year and only raising a little over $700 last year,” said FBLA sponsor, Mrs. Tara Pendleton, who organized the Pennies for Pies fundraiser.

To get students to help donate there was a contest held to see which class could raise the most money. The contest included every 7th hour class in NCHS. Whoever collected the most money won a meal during the week of Thanksgiving. The 7th hour class who won was Ms.  Christine Konopasek English I class, who collected a donation total of $200.

The money collected from the fundraiser will buy 106 pies, which will be enough for Thanksgiving. Home Sweet Home Ministries only needed 85 pies for the meals on Thanksgiving. The pies that are left over will be used for other upcoming holidays.

On November 21st, the FBLA will be having a similar fundraiser to Pennies for Pies – Dancing with the Staff. The fundraiser will raise money for the March of Dimes. Dancing with the Staff is a contest between 7 student-teacher dance teams, with proceeds from the door benefiting the March of Dimes charity.
