iPop for a cause

Every late start Wednesday, with the help of others, Nicole Rixstine (12) sets up her popcorn stand, iPop, in the front atrium during the lunch hours.

Rixstine sells popcorn for a variety of charitable causes – supporting families whose homes have been damaged by fires, fundraising for St. Jude’s and helping pay for the travel expenses to and from Peoria for a student who has medical issues.

In the future, the iPop staff plans on raising money for students with diabetes ,for a student whose sister has cancer and needs to go through chemotherapy. As well as, benefiting Mr. Stewart and Project Oz where the proceeds on will go to students to help with gas costs and grocery cards.

I Shop With A Cop is another planned cause where one lucky student will get an oppurtunity to shop with Officer Dowd for Christmas.

“I came up with the idea myself. I wanted to help families in need,” Rixstine (12).

Originally the selling of popcorn was to only occur for one week but that has now changed.

“I asked myself will students actually want to eat popcorn five days in a row?” says  Guidance Counselor Ms. Fee.

The answer was no, so that is when Ms. Fee and Nicole decided that they would sell popcorn every late start Wednesday.

So far , iPop has brought in an income of about $696. One hundred percent of the money goes to the causes.

“My goal is to allow students the opportunity to give to a cause they feel passionate about and to make other students feel good about giving back,” says Fee.

Any students who would like to  help with a cause can do so by contacting Ms. Fee.
