Ms. Kristi Chase remains in close contact with several former students, maintaining the bond they built during high school.

One of those students, she said, leaned on her during a turbulent senior year—navigating applications for food stamps and a medical card while facing the uncertainty of living alone.

Now, that same student is thriving—working full time, attending college, living independently.

“We went out to dinner a couple of months ago,” Chase said. “We text and talk pretty frequently… she has her own apartment, she has a car—and I could just cry thinking about it.”

When Ms. Giermann was in junior high, her school had no counselors or social workers, something that helped her realize early on she wanted to be that support for students.
She earned a degree in social work and planned to become a school social worker—but when she realized she’d only work with a limited group of students, she shifted to counseling to reach more kids and make a broader impact.

In high school, Ms. Bollmann said she leaned on her counselor for a lot of support: navigating college applications as a first-generation student and her parents’ divorce.
Inspired by his help, she became a counselor to offer students the same guidance.

Ms. Ince spent five years teaching English at Community before shifting to counseling—drawn not by the subject matter, but by the daily student connection.
Now, she juggles a caseload of hundreds, manages spring testing and dual credit—and still starts every day with a six-mile run.
