Iron volleyball head coach approaches milestone more than two decades in making

Mr. Jeff Christopherson

After Iron volleyball’s 4-1 weekend at AutumnFest, Community head coach Ms. Christine Konopasek is one win shy of 400 career victories.

The veteran coach will have the opportunity to reach the milestone Oct. 21 on Community’s home court when the 27-5 Ironmen host a 3-21 Danville team.

A victory over the Vikings would come with added significance for the coach as the Iron celebrate the roster’s seven 2026 graduates at Senior Night.

The milestone, 16-years in the making, is one Konopasek said she’d love to earn with what she describes as “a great group of kids.”

Her 400th win, the coach said, is an honor she doesn’t want to achieve with any other roster.

“I want that with them,” Konopasek said, tearing up. “Getting to be with them every day makes this job so fulfilling and fun.”

There hasn’t been a day this season, Konopasek said, she hasn’t looked forward to her time with the team.

Konopasek called particular attention to veteran stars Sam Lakamp, Maggie Michaels and Alana Whitfield.

“That’s not to discredit anybody else,” Konopasek said, “But I’ve had them for three and four years.”

Whitfield, a Michigan-State commit, has played at the varsity level since her freshman year, with Michaels and Lakamp joining as sophomores.

Over that time, Michaels, a University of Northern Iowa commit, said, Konopasek has helped foster “a supportive” and “loving group.”

Konopasek compared the seniors to another outstanding group of players—the class of 2017, a graduating class that featured Grace Cleveland and Jamie Vasilou, two Ironmen who went on to have successful collegiate volleyball careers.

That roster earned Konopasek one of her two trips to State, taking home a third place finish in Class 3A, notching Konopasek’s 200th win along the way.

A win over Danville would see the Iron go undefeated in Big 12 play, earning the Iron’s first Conference title since 2021.
