Two doubles teams reach IHSA State Girls Tennis tournament after sectional win, fall in early rounds

Two of Community’s girls tennis doubles teams competed in the 2A IHSA State tennis tournament on Oct. 24 following the team’s first-place sectionals finish.

Community was crowned Moline Sectional champions, narrowly edging out the tournament’s host 22-21, on Oct. 18,

in the sectional meet, the doubles teams of juniors Reese Michaels and Ashley Walls, as well as senior Avery Anderson and freshman Vienna Quach, finished second and fourth respectively, securing their spots at state.

Michaels and Walls punched their ticket to state with a season record of 20-8, while Anderson and Quach stood at 16-5 ahead of this weekend.

Both pairs faced tough competition in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday. Anderson and Quach were defeated by Chicago Latin’s Malia Chen and Nicola Kupczyk 6-1, 6-1. Michaels and Walls fell 6-1, 6-0 to Barrington’s Shriya Ramesh and Courtney Croll.

Michaels and Walls won the first round of consolation play, handing Champaign Central’s Kara Charney and Fiona Leakey a 6-3, 6-0 defeat before falling to Conant’s Advita Deepak and Nidhi Karekar by the same score.

Anderson and Quach bowed out of the competition after a 6-1, 6-0 loss to a team from Evanston Township in the opening round of the tournament’s consolation play.
