When the Ironmen bathed head football coach Mr. Jason Drengwitz in Gatorade after Sept. 14’s shutout victory over the Urbana Tigers, he had no idea why.

“I had no clue that it was my 50th win,” Drengwitz said after the game. “I don’t keep track of that.”

But someone on Community’s sideline must have, celebrating the seven-year head coach as he improved to 50-14 all-time.

“When I got named to be the head coach,” Drengwitz said, “I felt like my job was just to maintain and try to find my own way, our own ways to enhance” the Ironmen football program.

And he has, keeping Community’s 27-season playoff streak alive, leading the Iron to five straight playoff berths, excluding 2021’s shortened COVID spring season.

As far as enhancing the program? Look no further than last season.

Drengwitz led the Iron back to the IHSA State Semifinals for the first time since the 2007 season.

The 50-win mileston, Drengwitz said, isn’t his achievement alone.

Those wins are a collaborative effort, something to be shared with “our players, our coaching staff, all our families”—a Community of supporters he could only describe with one word: “great.”

To be a part of the Ironmen football legacy, a storied history built by “so many great players,” “outstanding families, so many great coaches that have come before, the coach said, is an honor.

“I just feel lucky and blessed to be a part of this program, the coach said, one “that’s been good for so long.”
